| The Wylies Move West by Janet Novak About 1855, Betsy and Ezra Wylie, the parents of Bertha, who was later to marry Samuel Dearborn Morrill, left New England for the Mississippi River bordering Wisconsin and Minnesota, to meet Ezra's brother who had arranged for Ezra to work in the logging camp where he was employed. Betsy, Born Feb. 2, 1835, in Vermont was 20 years olf. Ezra, born about 1826, was 29. The journey west started with a boat trip on the Great Lakes from Buffalo, N.Y., to the area around Milwaukee, Wis. After paying for food and transportation, all their worldy possessions were locked in a hand-made trunk which was lost during a fierce lake Michigan storm when they were forced to abandon ship and had to make their way to shore in life boats. From there to the Mississippi River they traveled by state coach. When they arrived on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi, they found that Ezra's brother and his logging job, was on the Minnesota side. Without money, they bravely boarded the ferry that would take them across the river, hoping that Ezra's brother would be there to pay their fare. As they were leaving the ferry, Ezra spotted a quarter on the gangplank. The money was his for only a few minutes. When he asked the ferryman the cost of the ride, he was told it was 25 cents. The Wylies spent several years working at the logging camp, Ezra as a wood cutter and Betsy in the cook shack, before they moved to Diamond Bluff, Wisconsin. In its early days, Diamond Bluff had been touted by its developers as a future center of transportation, manufacturing and commerce. It, and other river towns with similar aspirations, lost out to what is now the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. We found records of many land transactions, the buying and selling of property in the area, By Ezra and Betsy. Could they have been speculating on what they hoped to be a future metropolis? After Betsy and Ezra moved to Diamond Bluff, they had seven children, of which only Bertha and Jessie lived to adulthood. In 1878, The Pierce County Herald reported that "Ezra Wylie of Diamond Bluff has recently lost his oldest boy. He died of scarlet fever." |
| The Marriage of Sam Morrill and Bertha Wylie by Janet Novak Bertha Wylie left her home in Diamond Bluff, Wisconsin, to attend Winona Normal School in Winona, MN and then taught school in East Granite Falls. We don't know how Sam and Bertha met, but letters between the two written during courtship reveal their caring, tender and affectionate feelings for one another and indicate that Sam looked to Bertha for support in many ways, support that Bertha willingly offered. Eight years after she had moved to Granite Falls, on July 26, 1890, Sam and Bertha were married. |
